The Best TV Series to Stream This Week

If you're looking for a new show to watch this week, the vast landscape of streaming networks will provide plenty of them. There's a new season of The Old Man if you want a Jeff Bridges fix, or you could check out How to Die Alone, which is a comedy, despite its title. That's not all, of course. Read on for the rest of the week's crème de la strème.

The Old Man, season 2

Jeff Bridges plays the old man of the title, Dan Chase, a geezer with a secret past. Chase's final act goes in an unexpected direction when his daughter is kidnapped in connection with the life he left behind in the CIA. Instead of waiting for death, Chase hunts his daughter down with the help of his former nemesis, FBI agent Harold Harper (John Lithgow). The first season of The Old Man earned nearly universal critical approval. Will season 2 measure up?

How to Die Alone

The hilarious Natasha Rothwell stars in a gentle comedy series that tackles big questions. Wise Guy David Chase and The Sopranos

The Sopranos expanded what audiences could expect from television when it came out 1999, and Wise Guy, an HBO original docuseries, digs into why this show was so much better than every other show. Packed with interviews with The Soprano's cast, crew, and especially its creator David Chase, Wise Guy is a must-watch for fans of The Sopranos and anyone interested in the creative process behind a TV show.

The Money Game

On July 1, 2021, college sports changed forever when student athletes were granted the right to profit from their names, images, and likenesses. This docuseries follows Louisiana State University players and alums whose lives were radically altered by the decision. Gymnast Olivia Dunne, basketball star Angel Reese, and Heisman trophy-winning quarterback Jayden Daniels are among the athletes featured in The Money Game, and each has their own way of dealing with the sudden influx of cash and controversy.

The Grand Tour: One for the Road

Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May aren't household names in the United States, but it's a different story in the UK, where the trio were hosts of Britain's beloved Top Gear for years before striking out on their own in The Grand Tour, an irreverent "British motoring show." Every tour comes to end though, and One for the Road documents Clarkson, Hammond, and May going out in style: driving around Zimbabwe in a Lancia Montecarlo, a Ford Capri 3-litre, and a Triumph Stag.

Cabin in the Woods

Anyone who has ever seen a horror movie knows that nothing good happens in a cabin in the woods, and this Max/Investigation Discovery series proves that the rule applies to real life too. The atrocities and murdered featured in each episode of this true crime show all happened in creepy, woodsy shacks.

If Cabin in the Woods isn't enough true crime for you, ID and Max are also premiering How (Not) to Get Rid of a Body and The Real Murders on Elm Street in September.

Last week's picks

Slow Horses, season 4

Apple TV+'s Slow Horses may be the best show on television. The first three seasons of this British espionage series about the worst intelligence agents in MI5 earned a nearly 100% fresh rating on rotten tomatoes from both fans and critics for it's all-killer-no-filler pace and its intriguing rogues gallery of characters. Season 4 opens with bomb going off at a shopping center, and new agents assigned to Slough House.

The Perfect Couple

In this drama about murder among the privileged, Nicole Kidman plays Greer Garrison Winbury, the matron of the richest family in Nantucket. She’s planning a huge wedding for her son, but the event of the season is threatened when a body washes up on the beach, setting in motion an investigation where we learn whether the Winbury clan is normal-rich or kill-someone-and-get-away-with-it rich. The Perfect Couple’s cast includes Liev Schreiber, Eve Hewson, Dakota Fanning, and Meghann Fahy.

Fight Night: The Million Dollar Heist

Based on a true story, Fight Night details a brazen heist that changed the city of Atlanta forever. On October 26, 1970, Muhammad Ali made his return to boxing, and Atlanta hustler Chicken Man (Kevin Hart) marked the occasion by gathering some of the richest, most connected people in Atlanta to a fight night house party. When a squad of hoods busts in and robs the guests, the authorities suspect the party's host masterminded the crime. To clear his name, Chicken Man must convince his nemesis, detective J.D. Hudson (Don Cheadle), that he's innocent.

English Teacher

I have a good feeling about English Teacher. Brian Jordan Alvarez both created English Teacher and stars as Evan, an idealistic gay high school teacher navigating the complex cultural, political, and personal landscape of a high school in 2024 America. It's earned an 86% on Rotten Tomatoes, a solid B+, and promises a fearless but sensitive look at how we're all getting along these days.

The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives

Mormon households have a reputation for being traditional and pious, with husbands working, wives raising babies, and everyone praying all the time. The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives rips the lid off that myth by documenting the true story of the Mormon moms of #MomTok, who are into partying hard and swinging like a screen-door. Scandalous!

Born Evil: The Serial Killer and The Savior

Executive Producer Michael Bay’s first true-crime documentary series goes to some very dark places. It tells the story of Hadden Clark, cross-dresser, cannibal, and serial killer. Born Evil digs into Clark's crimes and personal history, because you don't end up this messed up without coming from a very messed up place. Fans of grisly true crime should not miss it.
