If you’re thinking about grabbing the Samsung Galaxy A35 5G in lilac, now might be a good time—it’s $100 off, bringing it down to $299.99 from its original $399.99. It has a 6.6" AMOLED screen that is big, bright, and smooth with a 120Hz refresh rate. Its indoor visibility is solid with a display resolution of 2,340 by 1,080 pixels, but if you're often out in the sun, the screen can struggle with glare. That’s pretty typical for phones in this price range, though, so it’s not a huge surprise. But, with its IP67 rating, it’s fully dustproof and can survive a dunk in water for up to 30 minutes if you’re a little accident-prone.
The Galaxy A35 runs on Android 14 with Samsung’s One UI bringing additional features. Plus, you’re covered for the long haul with four years of OS updates and five years of security patches, even if it's missing a few bells and whistles like Samsung's Galaxy AI and mmWave 5G (which is faster than the sub-6GHz 5G it supports). And, while its performance is solid for everyday use, according to this PCMag review, the phone gets a bit warm after about 20 minutes of intensive gaming, but nothing too uncomfortable, and less demanding games run smoothly without heating issues.
The camera setup of the A35 includes a 50MP main camera with optical image stabilization (OIS), an 8MP wide-angle lens, and a 5MP macro camera for close-up shots. For selfies, you'll get a 13MP front-facing camera that delivers sharp, vibrant images, though reportedly the colors can be a tad oversaturated. On the storage front, you get 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage, with the option to expand up to 1TB using a microSD card (sold separately). Its battery life is nothing extraordinary, lasting around 10 hours on a full charge, though your mileage may vary. It recharges reasonably quickly, but the lack of wireless charging might be a downside if you’re used to that convenience. Plus, you'll need to BYO charger, as Samsung doesn’t include one in the box.
Alternatively, the Google Pixel 7a offers more RAM, giving it a bit of an edge in performance. However, it comes at a higher price of $459 (currently down from $499).
