Amazon currently has the GoPro Mission 1 Pro for $599, down from $699, and price trackers show this as its lowest price so far. Its Type 1 sensor is the main reason to consider it (especially if you shoot in mixed lighting or want more detail to work with later), while 8K60 and 4K240 offer plenty of flexibility for high-resolution footage and dramatic slow motion. Its Open Gate recording at 8K30 is also useful in a more practical way because it lets you capture a taller frame and decide later whether the final clip should be vertical for social media or wide for YouTube—you do not have to commit to one format while you are still filming. Its rear 2.6-inch OLED screen is also easier to work with outdoors than a smaller LCD.

You also get 10-bit color, GP-Log2, and HyperSmooth stabilization, so the camera is aimed as much at creators who plan to edit their footage as it is at someone mounting it to a bike or helmet. That said, you will need to supply your own microSD card, and the highest 240Mbps recording mode requires a sufficiently fast card. On the plus side, the body of the Mission 1 Pro is waterproof up to 66 feet without an extra housing, and mounting is flexible thanks to GoPro’s folding fingers, a standard tripod thread, and magnetic mounting support. Battery life is also a meaningful upgrade—according to this PCMag review, the camera recorded 4K60 continuously for nearly two hours without overheating. This is especially useful for long rides or travel days when constantly changing batteries would get annoying.

All said, the main question is whether you actually need this much camera—at $599, the Mission 1 Pro is still expensive, and the standard Mission 1 costs $100 less while covering most casual action-camera use. The Pro also skips the add-on lens support available on the Hero13 Black, so anyone already invested in those accessories loses some flexibility. And while GoPro’s Quik app and cloud integration make backups and editing easier, the (optional) subscription adds another recurring cost.
