I was a little slow to Reolink—I had tried their Argus line and didn't love the physical appearance or the app. But their PoE (power over ethernet) PTZ (point, tilt, zoom) cameras are a different story, and now they'd be my pick if I was out there buying cameras for the first time. You want PTZ to give you the best 360 view of your space, and the PoE provides better security from wifi hackers.

Blink cameras are a little rudimentary compared to other high-end security cams, but for $39.99, they’re a great deal. I found them easy to put up, and they keep a decent battery charge with a pretty good field of vision. The resolution is great, and the system is extendable, which I really like. Pro tip: Get a Sync module so you can store clips locally, skipping the subscription.

Ring Wired floodlight camera

40% off is nothing to sneeze at, and as someone with a lot of Ring products at home, I like the level of notifications I can achieve with some adjustments to the cameras settings. This 1080p camera has two-way talk in addition to the security siren.

I tested this model of floodlight and really liked the high resolution of the camera and how easy it was to install. Changing the battery is pretty simple too—you just pull the camera off to do it. The lights turned out to be a nice addition, illuminating spaces as I walked through them.

You Should Splurge on Festive 'Permanent' Outdoor Lights for Prime Day

I’ve never really understood outdoor Christmas lighting—it seems like a lot of work to put it up and take it all down every year. But last year, I got to try out new permanent outdoor lights, and I am forever changed. You should use the October Prime Day sale as your excuse to grab permanent outdoor lights that are on sale. 

It’s not just that permanent lights will relieve you of hours of labor every year. They are also smart lights, and you can change them to basically any color you want. On a regular Tuesday, they can be a soft warm or cool white. For Christmas, sync them to music—change it up for any holiday you want. (St. Patrick’s Day has never been so festive at my house.)

They really are permanent, at least in that mine survived the worst Portland winter in fifty years). The lights don’t use the hooks that you’re accustomed to: They go up under your eaves or on the bottom of your gutters. They throw light against the exterior walls of the house, so the farther they are from the house (the deeper your eaves are), the more light is thrown. But if you have tiny gutters or eaves, don’t worry—they'll still throw off plenty of light. And because of the range of colors these lights can achieve (thousands of blues, for instance) you can wash your house in a peaceful ombre, or have it light up like a flashing rainbow. Your choice. 

Although I tried Govee's last year and they've released a new version for 2024, lots of companies have their own versions now, and most are on sale.

The only downside of Govee's lights was their app, and over the last year, it has vastly improved. This is their second version of these lights, and I've used them the last two weeks without issue:

How to Delete Your 23andme Data Amid the Company's Turmoil

DNA analysis company 23andme has been in trouble lately: data was breached in a 2023 hack, and this September the entire board of directors resigned over disagreements with the CEO. That CEO, Anne Wojcicki, had said she was open to third-party takeover proposals; she only reversed that decision this week. The company is not currently for sale, but nothing about this is looking good—and it’s not clear what would happen to customer data if the company goes under.

Is 23andme data being sold? 

So far there is no definitive word about the company being sold, with or without its data. However, it’s reasonable to expect that the company could be sold, and that owner could inherit the data. Something similar happened when MyHeritage bought Promethease, another DNA analysis company, in 2020.

Currently, your data may already be shared with other companies. If you signed up to participate in research studies through 23andme, “de-identified” data about you (including genetic data) has likely been given to research institutions and pharma companies. For example, 23andme has a data licensing agreement with GSK (formerly GlaxoSmithKline) to use the 23andme database to “conduct drug target discovery and other research.” 

This isn’t a possible future scenario, but rather the current operation of the business. Licensing agreements like these are a big part of how 23andme makes money. Or intends to make money. Or possibly once made money. They’re not doing so great at the money making thing these days. 

What happens when you delete your 23andme data? 

Deleting your 23andme data doesn’t necessarily withdraw it from studies, especially since the data was “de-identified,” that is, stripped from your name and personal information. It does mean that your data will not be used in future research projects.

23andme explains their deletion policies here and here. It says:

If you participated in 23andMe Research, your Personal Information will no longer be used in any future research projects. If you asked us to store your genetic samples, they will be discarded. We will retain limited information about you, including records of this deletion request, and other information as required by law and otherwise described in our Privacy Statement.

Where to download your data and delete your account

If you would like to keep any of your data, sign in to your account and visit your user settings page. (You can also opt out of research studies there.). Click View on the 23andme Data card. 

You’ll be asked to enter your date of birth to confirm your identity. In theory this is where you can download your data, but I can’t test this—I have a 23andme account, but I must have given the company a fake date of birth all those years ago. The website just tells me to contact Customer Care.

That sounds like a pretty bullshit obstacle to me, but here we are. A redditor says that Customer Care asked them to send a copy of their ID, which isn’t very useful if you used a fake date of birth. Still, the company’s documentation claims that you can download your data and delete your account if you can get past that screen. Good luck.

I’d Buy This Reolink Security Camera System for Prime Day

Recently, I was tasked with helping my friend Chuck, perhaps the most technologically knowledgeable and simultaneously suspicious person I know, set up a home security system for his new house. After looking at tons of cameras, home backup hubs, and connection types, we ended up with a short list of companies. Of the two, Reolink was the better priced and often better reviewed option. For Amazon's October Prime Day, many of their products are going on sale, so if you're also are looking to build out a security system, I recommend taking advantage of this deal on a set of four POE cameras and a home recording device for continuous, 24/7 recording. Usually this set is $559.99, but it'll be $349.99 (38% off) October 8-9 for Prime Big Deal Days.

I've come to like specific cameras because I want specific features. First on the list, they have to be PTZ (point, tilt, zoom), which gives you an almost infinite 360 degree view of the space you're observing, and you move the camera around with a remote control in the app. If you're concerned about security, you want a PoE camera, which is power over ethernet. This provides a continuous power supply and continuous connection and avoids wifi. These are IP cameras, which means you can really lock down who can get access to the stream or playback. Lastly, they're 4k, which is about as much resolution as any high-end camera is going to offer, and all you should need. Even on zoom, I find 4k does a great job from a hundred feet out.

The 2TB hard drive allows for continuous 24/7 recording. While this is a new trend in home security systems, I've yet to decide if I really need that more than the clips that most cameras currently serve you. However, clips do occasionally miss the action, and having 24/7 coverage means you would always be able to go back and look through for a missed detail. You can also install an external hard drive.

If, in the future, you decide to add more PoE cameras or wifi cameras, you could support up to eight of them in this system.
